Integrating Technology in Art Education
In Technology as Arts-Based Education: Does the Desktop Reflect the Arts? Gouzouasis argues, "Because new media demands artistic sensibilities, we are in a position to propose that artistic study is fundamental to technological endeavor if we wish technology to be the cultural threshold of our time" (2006). Integrating technology in art education is essential in developing student's visual communication skills. From creating to reproducing and communicating, technology plays a major role in the art classroom.
Rodney Pope states in his July 2 post "Integrating technology into the K-12 classroom has been in debate now for some time." I would like to further this issue and explore barriers to integrating and implementing technology in art education. According to Delacruz, "Art educators have written about the importance of embracing computer technologies for over 20 years" (2004). Despite this there are many obstacles that prevent teachers from integrating technology into their art room. These include administrative policies, institutional support mechanisms, training, time, understanding contexts, and other disparities (Delacruz, 2004). Other barriers include software complexity, changes in software and interfaces, planning, traditional materials, and using the internet for research (Mayo, 2007).
